The show was at The Independent in San Francisco last night. It was supposed to start at 9:00 we got there at 10:30, DJ still spinning no acts yet. It was supposed to be Pigeon John, Strong Arm Steady, & MF Doom. Pigeon John came out for a 25 minute set. D.J. spins for another 45 minutes, someone comes on stage and hooks up a sound machine, they take about a half hour trying to get it plugged in correctly.
This dude comes out and has everyone say Doom, then they play some long as intro for about 5-10 minutes and Doom comes out. He is holding the mic at his waist and a song starts with vocals and he turns around and it stops. Then they start some songs and Doom is rapping but you can't really hear him over the beat too much and the mic is right on his mouth, then I was like is this Mother Fucker lip synching? I kept trying to figure if he was lip synching, and I asked one of the dudes I was with is he lip synching, and he was "that's what someone else just asked him"?
People started booing and yelling Ashley Simpson & Milli Vanilli.
This fucker ran off the stage afte 15 minutes of lip synching and the show was over.
I got fucked out of my $28. Today I looked around the net and found out he has been doing it recently no-show or lip synching.WTF

Aren't you from Day By Day or some shit? I don't know, I'd have to hear it from someone I trust more to jump to those conclusions. Doom missing shows is nothing new though, but if your story isn't BS I think it would've been becuase of the crappy set-up in this rinky-dink club you went to who didn't know what to do with the sound.

Ben Grimm has been known to act as an impostor for DOOM in the past.
Anyhow, based on your description, it sounds like it may have been a problem with the sound system. At the same time, 15 minutes is shit.

No I ain't from Day By Day, I'm not in the industry at all.
It wasn't the sound system, Pigeon John sounded fine. Doom's hype man sounded fine and his mic was way louder. How hard is it to switch a mic?
Plain and simple everybody that night got fucked out of their money point blank. Their ain't know defending that shit, there should have been refunds.
I seen Doom before a few years ago opening for Kweli, so I know he knows how to rock a show. This Doom or whoever was up there looked scared as fuck 90% of the time, 10% looked comfortable. Then he ran off the stage and out the sgtage door to the back.
There is no need for me to make this up, just wait around and you will hear about it.
Lip Synching ain't Hip-Hop, if it is, it is some Hip-Hop I ain't fucking with

Even with the mask, DOOM is fairly easy to recognize. You can tell it's him just by the lip. Watch a few legit clips of him live (for example, from the Carson Daly show with De La Soul), and you ought to be able to tell whether it was the guy you saw at the show.

Just goes to show why most hip hop acts live end up being unimpressive and even upsetting. When there aren't any live instruments things can go either awesome or awful, there's no middle ground (thank God for The Roots).
I've seen DOOM before, and it was awesome, although it would've been outstanding if Madlib (an antisocial, btw, never met someone who hated being around people so much) would've been spinning, so it's possible that that cat in SF wasn't even him, or that he was fucked up outta his mind.

For one, Doom is notorious for missing his shows. I was supposed to see him for an exclusive free show here in Boston around when Dangerdoom was coming out, needless to say I got there and there was a sign up that said he wasn't going to be there. RJD2 and Danger Mouse pulled off ILL sets though, definitely still worth going.
For another, I got his live album and the Mm..Food DVD and he definitely is not lip syncing in those. It sucks he's resorted to that now though, that's a bunch of bullshit.

Well I guess he hasn't "resorted" to that on the account that people are saying it wasn't him, just some dude in his mask. I don't know why he would do that exactly, but it seems pretty funny and shows sometimes he really doesn't give a fuck in creative ways, so I don't see this incident in particular hurting his reputation apart from people being wearing of paying to go to his shows. In a way it feeds into the character he portrays on his records. I feel bad for people who paid money to see Doom though. I would've probalby been pissed.

at the nyc date he seemed like the real deal without lip syncing despite bein a short set. doom needs to get his shit together for real though. punkin' the media with imposters standin in for himself is one thing but pulling that shit live to his fans is another story.
i dont get at all why doom seems to be tryin this hard to stall out his career. he could be blowin up if he toured hard and made a good reputation for himself. i got serious doubts about any projects he's been workin on comin out after all this bullshit he's been pulling lately.

Orginally posted by DJ Enki
So I ended up being the opening DJ for the MF Doom show at the Independent last night. The show started off just fine--I played, Pigeon John played, I did another half-hour or so after Pigeon John, everything went along smoothly--then Doom took the stage. Or rather, "Doom" took the stage. That dude with the mask and the mic was:
1) lip-synching
2) not actually MF Doom
The only thing that was actually live about the show was the hypeman's mic. Everything else ran straight off a recording, and fake Doom pretended to rap and walked up and down the stage doing rapper hands. He faked his way through a set of about 20 minutes, walked off the stage, and jetted out the back door.
For this, people paid $28. They were fucking pissed, booing and throwing bottles onstage and shit. I would be, too. I ended up jumping back on again because, well, somebody had to do something.
There's supposed to be another show tonight, in part because last night's show sold out so quickly. I'm not totally sure it's going to happen, though. As of right now, it is, and if it is, then I'll go play it, but I damn sure ain't gonna be hyping dude up on the mic. Unless I can do some finger-quotes action like:
We got "MF Doom" in the house, and he's going to be "performing" "live" on stage!

Well, if it ain't Doom, then either:
(1) The promoter is one shady bastard.
(2) Doom signed the contract and is sending out an impostor... and is therefore a shady bastard.
(3) Both
Depending on the situation, the owner of the club should rightfully file a lawsuit (against the appropriate person/people).
Sadly enough, this is more pathetic than Wino (aka Winehouse)
